Frey Trail

 28 ½ miles from G.T.                                                                              mod/steep 3 miles R.T.

This trail used to be an extension of the Ellicott’s Trail as it was the main trail to Ellicott’s ranch from Uncle Tom’s cabin area. The trail once crossed the Rubicon River on a suspension bridge now long gone. Today the trail goes from the Hunter’s Trail up to the site of Ellicott’s ranch, then on to the rim road, F.S. 14N20. The rim road is about 3 miles up from Hunter’s Trail.

Directions: Follow directions to Hunter’s Trail and look for the more faint trail that crosses it at the top of the first moderate climb in about 1/3 miles. Take the trail left and climb approx. ½ mile to trail intersection. This is the Belix Trail going left. The Frey Trail goes straight ahead, while the right trail goes to the Ellicott Ranch site.

This Trail once was a main trail going miles to Desert Cold Springs and trails in the North Wallace Canyon area where it somehow became the Grey Trail. (typo error F-G?). It would take a real trail sleuth to follow the old route through all the logged clear cuts now hiding it. Better to take it to enjoy the ranch site with its remnant fruit trees, assorted antique junk, and nearby bedrock mortars. Try to imagine living that far away from any town as the Ellicott’s did 80 years ago.
